Uruguay – Part II

Back on the Road

On October 7th, after nearly seven months away, we landed back in Uruguay. Ever since we handed over the keys in March, one question had stayed at the back of our minds: how would our motorhome have handled the long Uruguayan winter?

We soon had our answer. At the storage facility near Dr. Francisco Soca, our motorhome was waiting exactly where we had left it, and in good condition. The only surprise was a few small traces of mold in the driver’s cab, a reminder of the humid winter months. After a thorough cleaning, the cab was fresh again, and the problem was behind us.

We spent the next six days at the storage site getting everything ready to travel again. While we waited for new brake pads to be fitted, we unpacked the gear we had brought from home, checked every system, cleaned, reorganized, and restocked. Bit by bit, the motorhome went back to being what it had been for 744 days: our home. Settling back into the old routines felt familiar and new at the same time.

On October 13th, we were finally back on the road, heading east along the Atlantic coast. Our first stop was La Paloma, a relaxed seaside town in the department of Rocha. We strolled through the town and treated ourselves to a nice meal at a local restaurant before spending the night at a motorhome parking area. Waking up to the sound of the ocean after so many months felt like the perfect way to begin this new chapter.

The next day, we continued north along the coast to La Coronilla, close to the Brazilian border. We parked near the beach, and despite rain showers and drifting fog, we set out for a long walk along the shore. We were rewarded with several bird species we had never seen before, a small reminder that even grey days on the road bring their own discoveries.

On October 15th, we said goodbye to Uruguay and crossed into Brazil at Chuy, the first new country of this second part of our South American journey. A new language, a new landscape, and many new roads lay ahead of us.

The break is over, the engine is running again, and the road is calling. Uruguay gave us a gentle restart. Now Brazil awaits.
